Regarded in China as very selective, Tsinghua University is known as the MIT of China. Many buildings are western-styled, which reflect the influence of America on Chinese society. It has strong engineering and medical schools. The university is also has a beautiful campus, and similar to Peking University, it is set on former royal gardens.
This past year, Tsinghua University student enrollment reached over 25,000, of which there were 14,000 undergraduates, 10,000 Master's and Doctoral candidates, and about 1000 foreign students coming from over 85 countries. Tsinghua University welcomes international students. Since the adoption of the opening up policy in China, the number of foreign students has also greatly increased and is continually rising.

Library

Originally established in 1919, the
University Library was expended
twice. The new five-floor building
of Tsinghua University Library,
which was finished in 1991, was a
cooperative work between the
Research Institute of Architectural
Designing and the Architectural
School of Tsinghua University.
Now it covers an
area of 38,500 square meters with
a collection of 3.38 million
volumes of books, 14,000 kinds of
electrical journals in Chinese and
English, over 180 databases and
thousands of audio and video
materials. |

The
library has a relatively complete
collection of electronic resources
including both domestic and
international online services. |
Rising through the center of the 20,000-plus
square meter library is a four-story catalog hall with more
than 20 rooms of books on a variety of specialties. It also
consist smaller reading rooms, exhibition and lecture halls,
and many lounge areas. It has received several national awards
for its architectural design, such as First Prize in the
National Architectural Design Competition in 1993. The new
library was built with red bricks, blue tiles, and a few
arched gates outside its entrances in order to retain the
unique style of the original building.
Recreation Facilities
The University gym is noted for its historic
and cultural value, which became a popular place for
generations of Tsinghua graduates. It also gains its name by
producing thousands of talented athletes to represent China
from the field of physical education.
The gym was one of the most advanced of its
kind in the country when it was established. It consist two
stages, including the front hall with its Western Classic
architectural style built from 1916 to1919 and back hall with
the same design style built from 1931 to 1932.
It provides various kinds of athletic
equipment. Including a basketball court, suspension athletic
track, and an indoor swimming pool, of which was used by
former Chairman Mao Zedong after the liberation of China.
Laundry
The dormitory building provides
coin-operated washing machines. Dry-cleaning services can be
found on campus.
Money & Banking
Many ATM machines can be founded on campus,
including those for the Bank of China, Industrial and
Commercial Bank, Agriculture Bank, and Construction Bank. An
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China is located off campus
within 15 minutes walking distance which accepts all of
foreign currencies
Medical Care

Students can bring their ID card to see the
doctors in the on-campus Chinese clinic. SOS, an international
hospital, is open 24 hours a day in Chaoyang District. A range
of medical services are offered such as dentistry, counseling,
physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and TCM
(Traditional Chinese Medicine).
The well- stocked pharmacy
offers Western medication and TCM ingredients. The patient can
make appointment at (8610) 6462-9112, and dental appointments
at (8610) 6462-0333. |

Food & Groceries
These on-campus dining halls generally offer
Chinese food for both Chinese and international students. A
numerous of restaurants are available off campus which offer
Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Western cuisine. There are some
grocery stores on campus selling various food, drink, snack,
daily use and household items. A Watson's and Lotus
supermarket are located within 5 minutes walking distance,
while Wal-Mart and Carrefour are within 10-15 minutes by
car.
Postal Services
A post office is available on the
first floor of the international students building. It is easy
to send and receive mails from all over the world. Post-office
boxes, envelope and stamps are available
there.

Location
Tsinghua University is located in northwestern Beijing, just outside the Fourth Ring Road, in Haidian district. Situated on several former royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty, the university is surrounded by a few historical sites, including the Summer Palace, which is located near the university's west gate.
Tsinghua University is 16 kilometers away from Tian' anmen Square and the Forbidden City, 37 kilometers away from the Capital Airport, 18 kilometers away from the Beijing Railway Station and 12 kilometers from the Beijing West Railway Station.
From the airport to the university: 1 hour by car From the train station to the university: 30 - 45 minutes by car
